I remember Dave as an excellent story teller. He would visit with me in my office at Corryton Elementary and after his relating a few "stories" my day vastly improved. Always a delight to be in his company! Sorry to hear the passing of this good friend.

Such great memories of an outstanding educator and a wonderful friend—he brought cheerfulness to everyone who knew him and made such a positive impact on education in East Tennessee. I learned a lot from him.
Shirley and family,
So many wonderful memories of when we all were young. I remember sitting on the church steps one night at Calvary. You and David had a spat over something. There was a bunch of us there. Some were suggesting a different girl friend for him. He was getting a little angry. Told them to shut up. If he couldn’t have his Shirley he didn’t want anyone. Rough days ahead but just take it “One Day at a Time “. I love you ❤️ Bobbie Massengill
Thinking about all of you and sending love and prayers!

With a heavy heart, we say goodby to our friend, teaching companion, and high school classmate. David was truly, one of a kind. He was loved and admired by all of his students. We loved teaching together at Lincoln Memorial University, and often ‘filled in’ for one another to accommodate personal schedules. Part of me will always be with David and I was so pleased to be one of his teaching associates. Farewell my friend until we meet again.
Shirley, I am so sorry about David. I know you will be lost without him. He was definitely a Special person in so many ways. I know you will find comfort from your Faith and your wonderful family. I am keeping you in my prayers.

Heartfelt condolences to Shirley, Kevin, and Kristen. “Mr. Wetzel” was my principal in high school and then I had the privilege of crossing paths after I became an educator. I loved having Kristen as a student. So many great memories of this man and family. Prayers for your comfort and strength. - Sharon Roberts CHS, Class of ‘77
I valued the time that I worked for him at Gibbs High. I learned so many strategies from him that I was able to apply when I became an administrator. He was truly one of the good guys.
Shirley - So sorry about your husband. My prayers are with you and your wonderful family.
David Wetzel gave me my first job at Carter high school and I learned so much from him as an educator but more important than that was learning about character. He was a friend and mentor. I still have a shotgun that I bought from him a lot of years ago. Just a great man.
Kevin & family, thoughts & prayers for all of you during this difficult time
Dr. Wetzel was the first boss to call me by my last name, "McGee, are you busy?" and he was the only person I ever called "Boss". Good memories of working. He loved students, teachers, and education. A great friend. Cherish your memories. Love and prayers from TN coming your way, Shirley, Kristin, and Kevin and families.
I CANNOT EXPRESS MY FEELINGS ABOUT THIS HUGH LOSS. David and I grew up together in ElizaBETHTON, PLAYED HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL TOGETHER AND PLAYED AGAINST Each other in college , he at Carson Newman and I at Lincoln Memorial University. He is in heaven with his many friends including Jay Nidiffer and Ray Vaughn. God bless you Shirley and family and hold you up in the difficult days ahead.
Dr. Wetzel was one of my education inspiration. I took nearly all of my grad classes under him to learn from his wisdom and life experience. He was a wonderful man and I feel blessed to have had him in my life as a professor. His words and wisdom still guide me today when work with fellow educators.
