Mrs. Leona Garner, 89

On December 3, 2017, Leona Clack Garner heard, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant” as she entered her eternal home in heaven. She passed into eternity at her home with her family.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, December 6, 2017, at Memorial Park Funeral Home Chapel. The Reverend Stephen Jackson will officiate.  The family will receive friends from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. and from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, December 5, 2017.

Mrs. Garner was born November 3, 1928, in Dawsonville to Albert and Marinda Patterson Clack. She was the loving wife of the late John Garner for 64 years. She was a woman of many strengths and talents in the various roles her life included. She was a supportive mother, devoted grandmother, and a delighted great-grandmother.

Mrs. Garner leaves behind two daughters and their husbands: Linda and Michael Harris of Roswell, and Mae and Nick Martin of Murrayville. She also leaves five grandchildren and their spouses: Michelle and Adam Suter of Marietta, Amanda and Stuart Lester of Roswell, Glenn and Jennifer Martin of Gainesville, Bethany and Tony Howard of Murrayville, and Julie and Halsey Gipson of Murrayville. She was a beloved Nanny to 13 great grandchildren. She is also survived by in laws: Charles and Lettie Lee Garner, Lois Garner, Lecy and Morris Brunson, Gladys and Don Waldrip, Carl and Wanda Garner, and Dan and Cindy Garner. She will be fondly remembered by nieces, nephews, cousins, and other family.

Mrs. Garner was saved as a young girl and lived her life modeling the qualities of a godly woman and deacon’s wife. She was active in teaching Sunday School and Bible School in Salem and Yellow Creek Baptist Churches. For many years she ministered to the sick and shut-ins through cards of encouragement for Yellow Creek. She wrote, produced and directed, and made many of the costumes for Easter plays at Yellow Creek.
Mrs. Garner lovingly provided a home and care for both of her parents at the end of their lives for almost 20 years in the home she designed and built with her husband John.  She enjoyed gardening, gathering family history, and was an avid reader.  She enjoyed traveling and exploring historical sites.

Leona attended school in Dawson County and Berry College for two years. She transferred to North Georgia College to finish her teaching degree. She attained her Master’s degree from the University of Georgia. Her career as a public school teacher included service in Dawson County, at Chestatee School in Forsyth County, and at Lumpkin County High School. She was appreciated and respected as a demanding teacher of English Language Arts and Literature. Her students were well prepared for successful college and career experiences. She created and taught a vocational curriculum that included life skills that assured success for her students in their future lives and vocations. During her years in the teaching profession, she enriched the lives of her students by sponsoring clubs and activities including producing plays at Chestatee School. She was a member of the Georgia Association of Educators, Delta Kappa Gamma teaching Society and the National Council of the Teachers of English. She was selected as Star Teacher more than once and was selected Teacher of the Year.

The family wishes to thank Encompass Home Health and Hospice for their care in her final months.

We also appreciate the care provided by her helpful sitters over the past few years.

Flowers will be accepted, or donations may be made in her honor to a favorite charity.

Memorial Park Funeral Home, 2030 Memorial Park Road, Gainesville, GA  30504 is in charge of arrangements.

So sorry to hear! Sure our dad and mom will be happy to welcome her as well. Many hugs and kisses to the family! Love, Steve, Karen, Katelyn & Ashlyn For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. Wherefore comfort one another with these words. 1 Thessalonians 4:16-18 KJV
