Boyd Bryson Hulsey, 84, of Gainesville passed away Thursday, March 4, 2010 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center from an extended illness.

Mr. Hulsey was a life long resident of Hall County.  He was born to David Jennings Hulsey and Fannie Bramlette Hulsey on October 2, 1925.  He had four sisters (Cleo Alexander, Fay Pinson, Anna Bell Wallace Redman, and Clara Davidson) and two brothers (David Jennings Hulsey, Jr. and Marion Lee Hulsey), all of whom preceded Boyd in their heavenly journeys.

As a World War II veteran, Mr. Hulsey served in the European Theater during the war.  He returned to Hall County after the war and went to work in the Cotton Mill Industry, working many years at Gainesville Mill.  During this time, Mr. Hulsey jointly owned and operated a garage and two gas stations with his partner Jay Roberts.  Then in 1965 Mr. Hulsey went to work as a member of the Hall County Sheriff’s Department under Sheriff Wilburn Reed.  Quickly rising to the rank of Shift Commander, Mr. Hulsey held this position until his retirement in 1988.  After Sheriff Reed left office, Mr. Hulsey served two other Hall County Sheriffs, Ed England and Richard “Dick” Mecum.  Current Sheriff, Steve Cronic, says that “Boyd’s influence within the department is still felt today.”

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Dessie Andrews Hulsey of Gainesville, son and daughter-in-law, Eddie Boyd Hulsey and Jacqueline DeAthos Hulsey of Evans, Georgia; grandchildren, Chad Jennings Hulsey, Christopher William Hulsey and Catherine Nicole Hulsey; and, sister-in-law, Penople Hulsey of Braselton, Georgia.  Mr. Hulsey’s oldest son, Larry Bryson Hulsey, died in February 1968 while serving in the United States Army in Vietnam.  Larry Bryson Hulsey was married to Janice Wolfe and had a daughter Kerry Lynn Hulsey before his death.  Boyd is survived by a multitude of nieces, nephews, and other family members residing throughout the United States.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, March 7, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. from the chapel of Memorial Park Funeral Home with the Reverends Steve Dyer and Bill Lawson officiating.  The Hall County Sheriff’s Office Honor Guard will present interment honors.          Mr. Hulsey’s family will receive friends Saturday, March 6, 2010 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
