Alford (Al) Smith Obituary

Alford (Al) Lee Smith, 81, of Flowery Branch, entered into God’s kingdom on May 21, 2023. He was born November 1, 1941, to Alton and Margaret Smith in Turkey, North Carolina.

Al, the most loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather is survived by his wife, Martha Anne; sons, A. Lee Jr, wife Stephanie, Michael Jeffrey, wife Tracey and Mark Alexander, wife Dakota; daughter, Lee Anne, husband Mike Jones; grandsons Troy and Kyle; granddaughters Amber and Brandi; his brother, Cliff and sister-in-law Juanita and his Schnauzer dogs, Ramble and Lace.

Upon graduation from North Carolina State University, Al married the love of his life, “his Bride” the woman who would stand by his side through thick and thin, Martha.  Throughout his over 50 years of management within the Pulp and Paper industry he would take his bride and growing family with him to live in Tennessee, Georgia, California, North Carolina, and back to Georgia to eventually retire with Rock-Tenn Company.  After retiring to Pensacola Florida, Al served as a Deacon of The First Baptist Church Pensacola.  After many years of serving the Pensacola community Al and his Bride returned to Georgia to live in the Gainesville / Flowery Branch area and continued to service at the First Baptist Church Gainesville.

While Al left us far too soon, the impact he had on the community will be felt for years to come.  His heart and mission to improve the lives of others included his volunteer work with CASA / Court Appointed Special Advocates, later he was proud “to come out of retirement” to be the Director of Ministry of Caring.

The funeral is scheduled for 2:00pm, Friday, May 26, 2023 in the Chapel at The First Baptist Church Gainesville, with Visiting hours to begin at 1:00 until the funeral hour. Dr Ron Grizzle will officiate the ceremony. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Al Smith’s life. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to:
