Edwin “Ed” Howard Gratton, 90, passed away peacefully on November 25, 2025. Born in Schenectady, New York to Edwin D. Gratton and Theresa Olmstead Becker, Ed later made South Florida his longtime home and the place where he built a life defined by hard work and humor.
After graduating high school, Ed served two years in the United States Army. Following his service, he attended the University of Florida, where he played basketball and earned a degree in secondary education. His passion for teaching led him into a lifelong career in education, eventually rising to the role of high school principal - a position in which he influenced countless students and colleagues through his steady leadership.
Beyond his professional life, Ed had an unmatched work ethic, especially when it came to the things he loved. He was happiest with a project in front of him, and especially enjoyed renovating properties. His sense of humor and friendly nature were trademarks that made him instantly likable; he had a gift for making people feel comfortable and welcome. And, in classic Ed fashion, he never learned how to use the internet - so he would never have read these words, but they reflect how deeply he will be missed.
Ed is survived by his children, Edwin “Buddy” Gratton and his wife Karen, and Mary Jane Kelley and her husband Ken. He was a proud grandfather to Kelsey, Samantha, Amanda, and Christiane, who will carry forward his strong work ethic and wit. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew him.
