Fern Byrd Patterson, age 92, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her family. Born in the Coal Mountain community of Forsyth County, she lived in Hall County for her adult life.
She earned degrees from Brenau College, Georgia State University and the University of Georgia to start and propel her teaching career. She taught in the Hall County school system for thirty years, finishing her professional career as principal of Tadmore Elementary School.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Lester Lelon and Myrtie Estie Roper Byrd and her siblings Irene Byrd, Geraldine (Alston) Turk, Fairy (Jack) Croy, Lester Lelon Byrd, Jr., Emma Jean (Frank) Morrow and brother-in-law Eric Ridings.
Fern is survived by her husband of seventy-five years, Heyward Patterson, daughter Cathy Patterson, son and daughter-in-law, Tony and Pam Patterson and her sister, Betty Ridings.
Her family will host friends Saturday, June 27, at Memorial Park Riverside chapel at 11:00 followed by a memorial service at noon. They prayerfully suggest memorials to one of Fern’s favorites: Edmondson-Telford Center for Children, PO Box 7062, Gainesville 30504 or Northeast Georgia Hospice, 2150 Limestone Parkway, Gainesville 30501 or the Georgia Retired Educators’ Museum, PO Box 1379, Flowery Branch 30542.
