Franklin "Scott" Cofer Obituary

Franklin 'Scott' Cofer, age 56, passed away peacefully at his home in Gainesville, on Thursday, September 4, 2025, with his family and beloved partner, Amanda Swafford, by his side. For many decades, Scott battled a rare form of Lymphedema, a condition that gradually reduced his mobility. His strength was especially evident in his final years; after ending his dialysis treatments for End Stage Renal Disease, he defied all odds to live four more years. He filled those years with resilience, joy and lots of fun, taking his first international cruise in 2024 and making special memories in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, with Amanda, who he lovingly called 'SwaffieCat.'

A Celebration of Life is being planned for October and will feature copious amounts of BBQ, turkey, and tater tots. A true Master Chef, Scott delighted in explaining to anyone who would listen why potatoes and limas do not belong in stew! His passion for smoking meats “lo and slo” brought him countless hours of food, fun, and friendship, and it's only fitting that we gather to celebrate him among the meats!

Scott was born August 17, 1969, in Duluth to the late James and Edna Mayhue Cofer. A 1989 graduate of Johnson High School and a man of Baptist faith, he lived in Flowery Branch most of his life. Scott was a gifted welder by trade and worked for many years at Tunco Manufacturing where he was blessed to have worked alongside many lifelong friends, including Danny and Stephanie Gaddis.

Scott is survived by his beloved partner of 10 years, Amanda Swafford; his sister and brother-in-law, Anita and Stephen Johnson; and his niece, Crystal Nichole Johnson and her special friend, Jose Adrian Aragon. He also leaves behind two hens he loved very much, Ethel and Loocey.  The family extends a special thank you to his exceptional care team, including Paige E. Owens with The Longstreet Clinic, as well as his home healthcare nurses, Tania Constantino and Tiffany Brock. Scott is preceded in death by his parents, an older brother and his beloved hens, Nugget and Clarabelle.
