Gladys (Hierro) Merlo

Gladys Merlo, age 87, of Atlanta, GA, peacefully left this world on Monday, November 10, 2025, at her daughter’s home in Hoschton, GA, surrounded by her family.

Gladys was born March 18, 1938, in Havana, Cuba, to the late Gregorio Hierro and Elvira Otero Piñeiro.  She was one of seven children.

Mimi, as her family lovingly called her, was a devoted mother and grandmother.  She was a pillar of strength and support for her family, the glue that kept her family together in good times and bad. Her love for her family was unwavering, unconditional, always expressed through her kindness, wisdom, gentle spirit, and the countless ways she gave of herself without hesitation. She was also loved and respected by family, friends, and those who were lucky enough to know her. 

Gladys' faith in God and devotion to the Virgin were profound and unwavering. She carried the burdens of others in her heart, offering them comfort through her words and strength through her constant prayers.  

Gladys was an active member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church and The Atlanta Cuban Club, two communities that welcomed her with open arms.  Within these circles, she made many friends and countless memories. Gladys enriched the lives of those around her, leaving behind a legacy of devotion, friendship, and joy.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Guillermo Merlo, five siblings, brother-in-law, and a son-in-law.

She is survived by her daughter, Tamara Merlo Pettis; three grandsons, Christopher L. Pettis, Kevin M. Pettis, and S. William Stone; a son-in-law, Lee Pettis; a sister; and many nieces and nephews.

Rest in peace Mimi.  Our hearts are broken, but you will live forever in the memories you made throughout the years; our love for you will never fade.   

A memorial service will be held at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 2855 Briarcliff Rd NE, Atlanta, GA 30329, on December 13, 2025, at 11:00 AM.
