James Jones Jr. affectionately known as “Lil James,” was born on June 17th, 1959, to Geneva Jones and James Hunter in Gainesville, Georgia. At the age of 5, he was adopted by Robert and Ola Mae Evans and became a part of the Evans family for the next 62 years. During this time, he maintained a close bond with his biological siblings, who loved him dearly.
As a child, James was mischievous and a prankster. He liked to hide under the neighbor’s houses and outhouses, jumping out to scare them when they least expected it. As an adult, he kept his playful personality, as he was often filled with jokes, laughter, and smiles. He was always ready to assist those in need and be a helping hand. Like the time he walked his sister, Mary Johnson down the aisle and gave her away to be married. Meeting James was like seeing an old friend. He had a way of making everyone he met feel welcome.
A dedicated worker, he worked various jobs, but found his passion working with his dad, Robert, on the farm tending to livestock and serving his community. James joined Antioch Baptist Church as a child, and for a period became a member of New Life Missionary Baptist Church. Where he enjoyed being on the usher board and singing in the choir. James stayed by Robert and Ola Mae’s side until they passed. He then made his home with Mary Lois and her husband Tim Watson and began attending Antioch Baptist Church again.
James cherished his family above all else and found his greatest joy in spending time with those he loved. Whether sharing stories, offering support, or simply being present. He made sure his family always felt his love. James enjoyed the simple pleasures in life, especially home-cooked meals and working in his word search books. He had a special bond with his Golden-doodle, Buddy, who brought him comfort and companionship over the last few years.
James Jones Jr. passed away peacefully on March 19th, 2026, with loved ones by his side. James was a proud member of Hall County and carried that hometown spirit with him throughout his lifetime. Despite encountering various health challenges, James maintained an optimistic outlook on life. When you would ask him how he was doing, he would simply say, “I’m fine!” James will be deeply missed, even if he may not have realized the impact, he had on those around him.
He is preceded in death by his parents: Robert and Ola Mae Evans, Geneva Jones and James Hunter, and brother Edward Jones. Left to cherish precious memories are his brothers David “Jerry” Jones, Desmond Evans, and Terry (Juliet) Haley. His sisters Mary Lois (Tim) Watson, Theresa Hester, Flora Dell (Henry) Thompson, Lizzie Jones, Rhonda Evans, Mary (Darrell) Johnson, Judith Williams and Thea “Lisa” (Ernest) Moore. Nieces, Natasha Pusha Nicole Oliver, JaMesha (Kevin) Clarke, Kendra Chunn, Brittany (Kevin) Jones, and Nadia Millsap. Nephews, Quincy (Mandi) Hudson, and Joshua Millsap. As well as a host of uncles and aunts.
