Mr. James Edward Landing, Sr., a devoted family man, proud veteran, faithful servant of God, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a rich legacy of love, service, and cherished memories. He was born to the late Son & Susan Landing on March 3, 1941, in Sylvania, Georgia.
James grew up valuing hard work, completing his 8th-grade education and later earning his GED. On April 15, 1965, he wed the love of his life in Atlanta, Georgia, beginning a beautiful journey of family and commitment.
A proud patriot, James answered the call to serve his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War from 1968 to 1969, achieving the rank of SP4 (E4). Following his military service and years of dedicated hard work, James enjoyed a well-deserved retirement. He was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where he drew strength and community.
James lived his life with a servant’s heart, always providing for others and helping anyone in need. He poured his energy into raising his children and "grandkids," and found great joy in hand-making wood projects, especially for children.
Above all, James loved his family. He thoroughly enjoyed watching old Westerns on TV and savoring home-cooked meals prepared by his family. The holidays held a special place in his heart—Christmas was an extraordinarily magical time, during which James loved playing Santa Claus for the children.
James passed down invaluable life lessons to those he loved. He taught his family the true importance of helping others and providing service whenever it was needed. He also shared his wealth of practical knowledge, teaching the arts of fishing, mechanics, welding, and carpentry.
Known for his wonderful sense of humor, James loved to laugh. He frequently shared stories about his hunting dog named Driver from his childhood and the adventures they had together. He found immense joy in the jokes told to him by his brother.
James wishes to be remembered simply and powerfully: as a godly man who fiercely loved his family.
James was reunited in heaven by his beloved wife, Tinnie Mae Landing; his daughter, Judy Lynn Landing; his parents, Son Landing and Susan Emily Freeman; and his siblings, Bo Cecil Landing, Douglas Dean Landing (Sandra), Betty Eliza Summers, Mildred Landing, and Robert Landing.
His legacy lives on through his surviving family, including his children: James E. Landing Jr., Alicia D. Horne (David), and Angela S. Owen. He is also survived by his siblings, Henry "Buddy" Summers (Donna) and Mary Ellen Landing, step brother, Pete Freeman, as well as a thriving family tree of 12 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and adopted family all of whom he adored. His adopted family called him poppa.
