John “Johnny” Buie, 78, of Gainesville, GA, passed away on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, after a battle with cancer.
Johnny was born in Bainbridge in 1947 to John Malcolm “Mack” Buie Sr and Ruby Franklin Buie. He graduated from Bainbridge High School in 1965 before enlisting in the United States Air Force. After serving in the Vietnam War, Johnny met and married the love of his life: Cecelia “Chee Chee” Shofner in 1976. He was employed at Amoco Fabrics (then Shaw Industries) for nearly 40 years before retiring to north Georgia in 2015 to spoil his new grandson. Johnny loved his family loudly. Also known as “Blue”, he never met a stranger, and you could always count on him for a tall tale and a good laugh. He had a unique sense of direction that made traveling anywhere with him a memorable experience. One place he could always find his way to was the Boat Basin, every afternoon of his life, where he could be found at “Buie’s Office” reading his book while his beloved dogs wandered the banks or rested at his feet. He was proud to be a member of the Masonic Lodge, a lifetime member of VFW Post 4904, and the Deep South Riders.
Besides his parents, Johnny was preceded in death by his daughter, Brandi Laing Buie, brother, Charles Wayne Buie, and his dog, Zoey. He is survived by his wife, Chee Chee Buie; his daughter, Darbi Buie Brock (husband, Brandon); his son, Mack Buie III; his grandson, Dylan Brock; his brother, Steve “Archie” Archer; his beloved dogs, Sparky & Roxie; and nieces and nephews he loved as his own.
Graveside services will be held at Oak City Cemetery on Saturday, February 28, at 11:00 am, with military honors and Masonic rites. Visitation will be at “Buie’s Office” (pavilion) at the Bainbridge Boat Basin at 2:00 pm. The family requests that everyone wear blue jeans or blue, in his honor.
