A much loved father, grandfather, great grandfather, son, brother, and uncle, Johnny Lee Warnock (aka “Sonny”) of Gainesville, GA, passed away peacefully on May 29,2026 following a long and bravely confronted battle with cancer. He was born January 29,1935 in Vicksburg, Mississippi, grew up in Rolling Fork, Mississippi and after a 32 year career with the U.S Forest Service being stationed in Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi and North Carolina, he retired back to Georgia for the last 41 years. Johnny married his high school sweetheart, Margaret Anne Kirby, raising two children for 69 years.
Johnny served in the Naval Reserves for one term. Johnny was an Eagle Scout, carrying his Badge into adulthood with 3 different Boy Scout Troops as their Scout Master. Over the years, Johnny continued his love for nature and Scouting, by leading Boy Scout Troops: Troop 151 Meadville, Mississippi; Troop 151 Gainesville, GA and Troop 3 Gainesville, Ga.
He was a master craftsman from building parade floats to tommy walkers to little girl’s playhouse. Johnny loved to play jokes on his children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Camping was a favorite vacation each summer with burned marshmallows and practical jokes as kids on the trail never knew if behind that curve in the trail to the outhouse was a bear waiting or just Granddad rustling a tree limb.
Johnny is survived by his wife Margaret Anne Kirby Warnock, daughter LeighAnne Patterson, son Mark Allen Warnock, granddaughter Jennie Fisher Voynich (Mike J Voynich), grandson Richard B. Patterson, granddaughter Kayleigh Star Warnock, Great-grandson Gabriel Connor Voynich, 2 Great-granddaughters Madison Lynn Patterson, and Addison Olivia Voynich. Johnny has many nieces and nephews that he loved so much.
Johnny is preceded by Great-grandson Peyton Allen Patterson. His family will miss him so much.
