Martha (Martin) Tanner

Mrs. Martha Martin Tanner, 79, of Gainesville, passed away Saturday, March 18, 2023 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center Gainesville.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 22, 2023 at Christ Place Church in the South Worship Room with Dr. Jim Austin officiating. Those attending please use the South entrance parking lot. The family will have a private interment at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Born on September 12, 1943 in Forsyth County, GA, she was the daughter of the late William Edward and Etta Lucinda Corn Martin. Mrs. Tanner received her Master’s in Education Degree from Brenau College. She was a second grade teacher, mostly at Jones Elementary, for more than 40 years. Mrs. Tanner was a member of Christ Place Church where she sang in the choir and taught Sunday school for more than 30 years.

She also loved making music with her sisters at church singings throughout the community and at every family gathering.

 In addition to her parents, Mrs. Tanner was preceded in death by her brother and sister in law, Herman and Mary Grace Martin; brother and sister in law, Kermit and Ann Martin; brother, Emmett Martin; sisters; Colene Ruby Martin, Carolyn West;  sister and brother in law, Regina and LC McNeal; nephew, Chris McNeal; brother in law and nephew, Don and Patrick Parks; brother in law, Benny Nix; sister in law and brother in law, Sarah and Ray Morlock; brother in law, Doug Tanner.

Mrs. Tanner is survived by her loving husband of 46 years, James R. Tanner of Gainesville; daughter and son in law, Gina and Brandon Adams of Alpharetta and son, Chad Tanner of Gainesville. She loved being called Mom and also “Grammie” by her precious grandchildren, Charlie Adams and Cate Adams of Alpharetta, Grayson Tanner and Rose Tanner of Gainesville. She is also survived by her sister, Mary Lou Nix of Clermont; brothers, Frank Martin (Stacy) of Gainesville, Ellis Martin (Nancy) of Gainesville; brother in law, Rev. Robert West of Gainesville; sister in law, Winnie Martin of Marietta; brothers in law and sisters in law, Gene and Martha Tanner of Gainesville, Larry and Ann Tanner of Gainesville; sisters in law, Cynthia Tanner of Gainesville, Nell Parks of Gainesville; a number of nieces, nephews and other loving relatives.
