Nancy Alexander Obituary

Nancy Cheryl Alexander was born on June 22, 1949 in Charleston, WV. She was preceded in death by her husband Thomas W. Mitchell, formerly of Charleston, WV and Exton, PA where he worked for Siemens. Nancy was the only daughter of James Randolph Alexander and Dorothy Crist Alexander, both deceased.

Nancy was the former principal of George Washington High School in Charleston, WV and Chichester High School in the Chichester District, PA, outside of Philadelphia.

A lifelong learner, Nancy earned numerous degrees from Marshall University:

Bachelor of Arts, Bachelors and Masters of Arts, Bachelors of Science and Master of Science. She also earned degrees in Social Studies and Supervision.

She often helped her father in his appraisal company and held a position on the National Board of Appraisers, where she taught classes for convention attending appraisers.

Nancy was an active member of First Presbyterian Church of Gainesville, GA where she was appointed a Deacon.

Her love of learning was evident by all of the Roads Scholar trips she went on with various friends. Her often travel friend was Cheryl Maitland of Exton, PA. Nancy visited countries on all continents and loved spending time during the summer months on the Amalfi coast in Italy, and organized many trips for her subdivision while living in Gainesville.

She served on the Community committee in Gainesville Newcomers and often left meetings with a carload of coats for those in need, or holiday stockings filled with toys for local needy children. She was also a volunteer at Jingle Mingle and other community activities.

During her years as either a teacher, assistant principal or principal, Nancy was a champion for underdogs and underprivileged students.

Nancy will be missed by many and requested in lieu of flowers, friends and family give to charities dear to their hearts. She would also like to thank the staff at Manor Lake - Gainesville for their care and kindness, as well as Golden Rule Hospice.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
