Vern was born on September 2, 1946 in Baltimore, Maryland to the late Vernon Joseph Benson, Sr. and Anna Schneider Benson. A proud veteran of the United States Army, he served honorably during the Vietnam War before beginning a distinguished career with the National Security Agency as a Senior Engineering Specialist. During his 38 years with the agency, he contributed as a member of the Promotion Advisory Board and received numerous awards recognizing his dedication and service.
On weekends, Vern could often be found in his garage, happily tinkering with one of his many cars. His passion for Corvettes was unmistakable, reflected in his frequent attendance at car shows and his involvement in various car clubs. He never turned down a chance to talk about classic cars. When he wasn’t under the hood of a Corvette, Vern was just as likely to be at the duckpin lanes, where he was an avid and enthusiastic bowler.
But more than his love of cars and bowling, Vern cherished being a grandfather and an uncle. The “babies,” as he affectionately called them no matter their age, were the source of his greatest joy and the reason for his brightest smiles.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Angie Benson; son, Tony (Stephanie) Benson; brother, Neil (Elaine) Benson ; sisters, Anita (Kelly)Tyner & Sandy (Fred) Hastings; grandchildren, Jackson & Avery; nieces Ashley (Jim) Gick, KellyAnn (Gavin) Jones, Abby (Brian) McCormick, Meghan Hastings, Libby (Shane) Barry; nephew Justin (Holly) Benson and many great nephews & nieces.
As his sister put it best, “Vern had the gentlest heart and an unwavering concern for others, offering help, comfort, and love at all times”.
