William John Schlechtweg, husband, father, grandfather & friend. Most would remember him as easygoing, kind, calm, patient and easy to be around.
William, better known as Bill, was born on April 14, 1937 in New York, New York to parents Alfred & Gertrude Schlechtweg. Bill passed away peacefully on September 27, 2025, with his wife by his side.
He is preceded in death by his parents, sister Doris Schlechtweg, son in law Thomas Hart Fleming, Father & Mother in law Reverend Theodore H. & Dorothy Bushmann, and Brother & Sister in law William & Carol Woods.
Bill is survived by his wife of 67 years, Joyce Schlechtweg, daughters Diane Fleming & Susan Bedell (Bob) and son William John Schlechtweg II (Kelly).
As well as his 9 grandchildren, Jenn Duncan (Donny), Rob Bedell (Ali), Theodore H. Bedell (Nicole), Thomas H. Fleming II (Darci), Kerry Fleming, Michael Bedell (Madison), McKenzie Schlechtweg, Delaney Schlechtweg, & Will Schlechtweg.
In addition to the grandchildren, 7 Great Grandchildren, Caleigh Nation, Ayden Hoang, Aubrey Fleming, Hart Fleming, Hudson Fleming, Theo Bedell, & Hawkins Fleming.
We also would like to include that Bill leaves behind many other family & friends near & far.
Bill & Joyce met at church in middle school. Joyce pursued Bill for their first date to the movies.
They were married June 28, 1958.
Bill was a hard worker & loved his job. He was honored to be a member of the Sheet Metal Workers Local #137 in New York. He was so proud of his craft, it wasn’t unusual for him take drives to NYC to see signs on Time Square & Madison Square Garden that were created by his “home” West Side NeonSign Corp.
In 1995, Bill & Joyce moved to Sugar Hill, Georgia. Being the “work-a-holic” he was he couldn’t just retire. Bill helped his son in law run Evergreen Landscape Supplies and then later enjoyed working at Publix.
Bill was a New York team fan at heart! He loved his New York Yankees, New York Rangers, and the New York Giants. He spent many nights yelling at the TV swearing to never watch these teams again, only to see him back at the TV the next night cheering them on.
He also spent many years on a bowling league.
Approximately 3 years ago, Bill became an avid reader. You would rarely find him without a book in front of him. Finishing a novel a day was not unusual. We couldn’t keep up with him, trying to make sure he had new books that would interest him ready at all times!
Going back to his New York roots, Bill LOVED Kaiser rolls from the Rockland Bakery. If you ever were visiting New York, he always had one request, to bring home some Kaiser rolls for him! Another favorite of his each get together, was his French Onion Soup Dip with pretzels and wavy chips. It was always a nonnegotiable! It will forever be “Grandpa Bill’s dip”.
Bill, Dad, Grandpa…rest peacefully alongside our Heavenly Father. You truly were one of a kind.
