William (Bill) Hartselle III of Stone Mountain, GA, formerly a resident of Village at Deaton Creek in Hoschton, passed away Tuesday, September 16, 2025, following a lengthy illness. He is survived by Joan Hartselle and their two children (William A. Hartselle and Deborah Hartselle Hayes), daughter-in-law Kim Hartselle, son-in-law Bill Hayes, four grandchildren (Lindsey, Virginia, Bill, and Andrew), and sisters Dianna Flemming and Darleen Mears. He was known for his warmth, outgoing nature, and devotion to family and friends. He was loved by all.
Bill grew up in Hartselle, AL, graduated from the University of Alabama where he was a member of Kappa Alpha fraternity, and remained a huge fan of Alabama Crimson Tide football throughout his life. He had a successful career as a chemical engineer with Exxon in Baton Rouge, LA and later with Tredegar in Newnan, GA. Prior to that, he served in the US Army at Fort Sill and Fort Benning.
He was inquisitive and creative and always enjoyed inventing, and he held several patents on numerous inventions. One of his most successful inventions was the hands-free restroom door opener, which is in use in thousands of locations throughout the country.
