William Harper Wilson
September 4, 1929 – October 8, 2025
William Harper Wilson, Of Gainesville, Georgia, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and patriot, passed away peacefully on October 8, 2025, at the age of 96. Born in Bakersville, North Carolina, to Elma and Frank Wilson, Bill lived a life marked by integrity, service, and deep faith. A 1952 graduate of North Carolina State University, he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering before serving his country as a 2nd Lieutenant and radar officer in the U.S. Army during the Korean War period.
In 1962, Bill married the love of his life, Barbara Hubbard. Together, they built a home filled with warmth and purpose, raising two children, Heather Goode (Jerry) and David Wilson (Angie). His legacy continues through his cherished grandchildren: Anna Fowler (Owen), Reese Wilson (Madison), and Sophie Cargill (Sam), who call him their beloved “Daddo”. He also cared deeply for the spouses of both his children and grandchildren and treated them as his own. Bill spent much of his professional life in Alexandria, Virginia, working in private industry designing electronic communications systems for national defense. His career took him across the globe—from Europe and the Middle East to Africa and Asia—where he served both major corporations and clients as an independent consultant.
Despite his many career achievements, it was his family that was his pride and joy. As an only child, he was particularly close to his cousins: Mary Whitson and Jean Dale, who survive him, and Joe Young, Lillie Byers, and Francis Young who have gone on to be with the Lord. He loved to visit his boyhood home in the mountains as often as he could. No family gathering was complete without Bill’s secret cocktail sauce recipe that no one has yet been able to replicate.
A man of unwavering character, Bill was known for his uncompromising work ethic which was a great example to friends and family alike. He was a long time member of the Episcopal Church and, as a true believer in Jesus Christ, his faith guided every aspect of his life. He will be remembered not only for his professional accomplishments and service to his country, but for the quiet strength, kindness, and wisdom he shared with all who knew him.
A private family service will be held to honor his life and legacy. In lieu of flowers, please consider honoring Bill with a donation to Samaritan’s Purse (samaritanspurse.org) or The Gideons International (gideons.org).
